My name is Michael Cronin, and my Great-Grand Mother, Mary JOsephine (Berding) Krogman, is a daughter of Frank and Josephine Berding.
The Krogmans were not good about keeping track of their family history, and I am trying to piece their family’s information back together. I found your Berding information on the internet by typing ‘Frank Berding’ into a search engine.
I was wondering if you have any more information about the Berding Family. I am particularly interested in finding birth, marriage and death dates for Frank and Josephine and their immediate family, as well as obituaries and photos of the family.
I have attached what I currently have on the Berding Family. The information on the children and their spouses needs further validation, but the 1900 US Census indicates that Mary Ahlers was the mother of Josephine (Ahlers) Berding.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,Michael Cronin

We seem to have some names and dates in common. If this has a connection please respond and see what we can add for each other. koyoty@goodnet.com
92. Rootweb.com posting by W.N. Safford saffuire@comcast.net posted March 7, 2010.

I was reading the Burken board at rootsweb adn followed the link you posted to your site. I wanted to send you a correction.

Regarding Catherine Annie Mary Simons (Aug 1841-18 Feb 1884), wife of Anton Burken. Her father is shown as Nicholas. That is an error that seems to have originated from the bio of son Hubert Burken in The Biographical Record of Clinton Co., Iowa, Illustrated pub.: Chicago : S. J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1901. Nicholas Simons(aka Simmons), 1829-1902, is her brother. Their parents are Mathias Simons 1798-1863 & Mary “Margarethe” Schumacher 1807-1884. My gg.grandpa, Johann Anton/John Anthony Simons is another child of Mathias and Margarethe.

Also, fyi, I do not have Catherine as part of Anton’s wife’s name. That doesn’t mean it isn’t, just that I have not seen it and so far, can not find the source for it. She is Anna Maria Simons (aka Simmons), who was called Mary. 1856 IA state census as Mary. 1870 US census as Anna M. 1880 US census as Mary. Headstone as Anna M, Burken. I have posted her headstone on findagrave.com. To view it, from the findagrave.com home page, right side, pick Search 42 Million Grave Records. Then search on Anna Maria Burken.

That’s it. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
W.N. Safford

Assenmacher’s in Clinton county.

From: Bigknpie@aol.com
Date: Sat, 24 Oct 1998 10:15:01 EDT
Subject: Re: Burken Surname

I would love some of the information that you have except for I have a
really old system and I am new to this. I'm not sure what a GEDCOM file is.
I have a few of the missing pieces your family tree.
First Clemens Assenmacher born September 1850 in Cruezberg, Prussia,
Germany. Came to the United States with his parents and siblings 1868 on the
S.S. Hammonia. I'm not sure but have a lead that they settled in Keokuk
County Iowa in the late 1800's. The reason I came to this conclusion is we
have photo album around 1902 that shows an Assenmacher house in the Keota
parrish area. Or so the caption reads. I also have pictures of Clemens,
Veronica and her sisters Minni, Mary Anna, but I don't seem to have a picture
of John Matthew, or his picture doesn't have a caption. Also included in the
pictures are Clemens and Veronicas children Elizabeth, Mary, Magdelen, Cathryn
and my grandfather Mathias. Elizabeth A., Magdelen and Cathryn never married
and lived in Clinton until their deaths. They are all buried in the St.
Boniface Cemetary at the edge of town by Eagle Point Park. Mary (Mamie)
married John Herwath in Charlotte, IA (born 1883) and they had four children.
Joseph, Marie (Driscoll), Rosemary (Skoff), and Veronica (Skoff). John's
parents were John and Catherine (Buthala). Joseph b.1916 d.1980 was married
to Isabelle ?. Marie b.1918 d. 1996 was married to Frank Driscoll b. ? d.
1997 they had one son John that died in the late 1970's leaving behind his
wife Sandy and their three children Mary, Patrick and David. Rosemary b
Feb.18,1923 married Verl Skoff and is still living in Maquoketa in the house
her late husband built. They had children but I haven't written them down.
They also raised Veronica's children Donald and Gloria after she committed
suicide in 1946. She was also married to a Skoff and I'll have to get back to
you about his name. My Dad would know it.
This is probably confusing but here goes. Clemens father was
Nicolas(Niclaus) b. 1819 Prussia and his mother Mary Anna. Their children
Clemens, Hermann b.1853, Maria b. 1861 and Mathias b. 1863. We think some of
Herrmanns decendants are living in Missouri and my Dad's brother had contact
with them once in awhile..
Now skipping to Clemens son Mathias (my grandfather) b. Feb. 1897 in
Charlotte, d. October 1962 in Clinton, married Marie Arkenberg (a neighbor)
b. 1907 d. 1966 (her parents Henry and Katie (Brinkman)) They had three
children Lucille b. Aug. 10,1931 d. Aug. 19, 1968 married Lloyd Heiar and had
11 children. John b.1933 married Janella Bees and they had 8 children. Then
Robert b. July 1, 1935 married Helen Weets b. Sept 20, 1943 they had three
children and wer divorced in 1985.
This is just a basic run down as confusing as it is. If you have any
questions just ask or if you would like information on the Arkenberg's,
Brinkmans, Skoffs, Dricolls or any one else listed maybe I can help. Thank
you again!

Surnames in this biography are: McMillin, Young, McConnell, Downing, Wilson, Ellis, Buzan, Kendall, Pentecost, Bishop, Freel, Wood, Shauck, JOHN T. MCMILLIN stands foremost among the prominent and industrious farmers and stock-raisers of Union Township, and resides in the northeast quarter of Section 12. He was born near where he now lives August 30, 1831, and has spent his entire life in this township. We can trace his lineage back to about 1780, when we have an account of Thomas and Mary (Young) McMillen, who were his grandparents, emigrating from Ireland to America, locating in Washington County, Pa., and of six children being born to them; they were: Matthew, John, James, Ebenezer, Samuel, and Anna; also that their parents died in Washington County, Pa. John, the second son, and the father of the subject of this biography, was born in 1793. In 1815, he removed to Brown County, Ohio, and engaged as a farm laborer. While there, he made three trips on a flatboat to New Orleans, returning on foot each time to Brown County. There, on June 10, 1824, he was married to Susannah McConnell, a native of Brown County, Ohio, born April 30, 1800, and the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Downing) McConnell, the former a native of Pennsylvania, and the son of Arthur and Elizabeth (Wilson) McConnell, both of whom were natives of Ireland, but emigrated to America prior to the Revolutionary War, and settled in western Pennsylvania. Thomas McConnell, their youngest of nine children, and the grand father of our subject on his motherĂs side, was born in Washington County, Pa., November 4, 1772. About the time of his maturity he went to Mason County, Ky., where he married Mary Downing, a native of Pennsylvania, born October 7,1799. She was the daughter of John and Susan (Ellis) Downing. Soon after this marriage, Thomas McConnell removed to Brown County, Ohio, where he entered land and continued to reside the remainder of his life, his death occurring April 26, 1865; his wife having passed away November 5, 1832. He was a Captain during the War of 1812, and was with Gen. Hull when he surrendered at Detroit.

MILO BAXTER, farmer, Section 6, Township 18, Range 25, P. O. Paola. Mr. Baxter was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in November, 1832; when twenty years of age he went to Illinois and for a time made his home in Peoria County. From there he removed to Mercer County, where he was married February 22, 1860, to Miss Elizabeth McKean, daughter of Robert McKean. Mrs. Baxter was born in Pennsylvania. They have five children- three sons and two daughters, George B, William, Dora E., Clara E., and Frank. Mr. Baxter immigrated to Kansas in 1866 and settled near Paola, Miami County. In 1872 he moved to his present farm in Sugar Creek Township. Mr. Baxter began life in Kansas in moderate circumstance and by the exercise of sound judgment and more than the ordinary business sagacity, and by continued and energetic effort he has accumulated a large property, his farming lands embracing an even 1,000 acres, including some of the best lands in the State. He keeps a large stock of cattle, sheep and horses and hogs, and is known as one of the few large sheep growers of this section.

Doonan Family History
as written by Bessie Doonan

Some 70 years ago there came a new married couple from Ireland, there names were Christy and Mary Ann Blakley. They located a mile or more from Preemption, northwest. They got them an 80 acor farm.
Some time after his brother John and wife came, So they didn’t like the country so to get them stay Christy let John have the best 40 lying along the county line. That left Christy the back 40
So in time Christy Blakley died,he made a will, He left his wife 1/3 of this 40 acors and there 2 children each 1/3 that tuck it all, also they had oxen in partnership with his brother and some other percenal property for his wife to selland let his brother John have in exchange for a 40 acors that cornered on there other 40,She done so.and had to buy 2 acors of John to get from one 40 to the other.
She gave this last 40 to her 2 children,Jane and Christy
This Mary Ann had to wash and help a shoemaker in Preemption bind shoes to try and get along.
So her husbands sister Jane and her husband Tomas Doonan and son William came from Ireland and she let them come right in and the times weren’t the same 70 years ago as they are now , she had a log cabin just one room and no more.. They stayed with her for over 4 years.
Well times went on this Mary Ann went to St Louis and worked out, left the 2 children with her sister in law in her own house. She came back when she was able to come and this Thomas Doonan met her in her own house door, she had a boy baby in her arms and he said to her well I thought (naming a serton man by name)you and he were so grate, she told him he was the one and the only one right in front of his wife, So his wife went with Mary Ann the next day to the squires till Mary Ann swore the boy on him, James Y Doonan is his name, this was in the spring of 1852
This Jane Doonan had a brother living on the next hill , she would not go there, they were too close (tight)but there they stayed with this Mary Ann her sister in law, till he got him a house up and them left and went to it in the spring of 1855
So in April Mary Ann Blakley sent this Thomas Doonan word to get the doctor that she was sick, he pretended he was very angry, the doctor only lived one mile from him so Mary Ann was very sick and then had a girl baby and called her Bessie,so there is the help she got for all her kindness to her sister in law and her family for over 4 years
Thomas Doonan tuck the boy in 6or 7 years, his wife was pretty good to him, she was a fine woman,
And time rolled on and this Mary Ann Blakley married a man named John Wilson, well they had 4 childrenGeorge, John, Mary Ann and William Henry,. It was hard times then, Jane and Christy worked out most of the time and clothed themselves, Bessie helped her mother take care of those children and helped in the the fields too as horses was scaaarce and weeds plenty and husk corn and plant corn and potatoes and dig them and of course eat some to
So when Christy was 21 he had saved money and had built a 2 room house and a garret and a couple of horses and he bought his sister out and his mother, she only had 1/3 of a 40 acors and 2 acors more
Jane had married a man, the name of Robert Armstrong , they went out to Kansas and got them a home in the spring of 1870 , in the same fall John Wilson and wife and 4 children went to Kansas too.
Bessie Blakley as everyone called her, stayed and kept house for Christy, her right name was Bessie Doonan. She was then 15 years old, she stayed 4 years ,then she married James R. Doonan, her father’s brother’s son. He was raised in Ireland and Bessie was born and raised 1 mile from Preemption and hasn’t been 6 miles from homesince.
She told Christy a year before he better hunt himself a wife as she was going to get married, the next year he said if you never marry I won’t. Well this Bessie asked her father’s wife about it for she was Bessies best friend, so this Jane Doonan told Bessie she better marry as this was a good fellow and that Christy might see the right girl and forget what he said to her . Well it was hard to leave him, he didn’t get married for 10 months afterwards,
Now this Mary Ann married a man in Kansas after John Wilson died. her husband was no good only to keep meat from spoiling,so Mary Ann always had to work ,she had to husk corn and carry it home to feed,so she got sick and died in the fall of 1881 They buried her in Kansas and in due time Jane ,Christy and Bessie put a head stone up for her
Her husband married again but she sold a horse and tuck the money and left him and never came back.
James R Doonan and Bessie Blakley (Doonan) were married Feb 20, 1873. She still lived 21/2 miles from him so she don his washing and iron and baked his bread and went up once a week if it was fit and tidied up and scrubbed, He builta room on the house . He had thes carpenters ,but I done the baking , it wasn’t like now couldn’t get any bread
Christy married in the last part of Dec. 1874. This Christy Blakley and wife didn’t have any children. His wife died June 28, 1906 and Christy Blakley died April 20, 1913 . He died without a will, if found was kept secret. He has here in Ill.over 160 acors of land and 640 acors in Dakota.
Well it could a been seteled but we all thought we ought to have an administrator so we chose a nieghbor name of Clarence Clark. Well the sale came off, it mounted to 2000 dollars and what was in the house we were to take at what ever they were appraised at.
On one 80 his half brother had lived several years , so he said he had spent near 2000 dollars on improvements, so we five ,Jane Armstrong James Y. Doonan, Bessie Doonan, George Wilson, and William Henry Wilson, we sined a paper that a squire drew up to pay John Wilson 15 hundred for his improvements and he accepted it, also we all agreed to give Christy Blakley’s wife’s sister 15 hundred for keeping house for him after his wife died, she wa there when his wife died,, and they accepted it. Mrs. D, Clark is her guardian, her name is Maggie Sweeney
This is rather queer there is 6 brothers and sisters near equal in everything here in Ill, and only 4 out in Dacota, I would like to know how that can be or wat kind oflaws they have out there, He is near 2 years dead against the 29th of April
He has 640 acors in Dacota,,he gave from 40 to 60 dollarsper acor its at Redfield. James Y. Doonan and Bessie Doonan had to sine everything here and never talked to the administrator.
Now this Thomas Doonan and wife had advised this Bessie Doonan to Marry so she marriedher fathersbrothers son James R. Doonan of Reynolds, they worked hard and done well and have five fine children to be proud of, the all have farms and all married, all right in the neighborhood.
This Christy thought as much of her as any of them and often scolded her for working so hard.
If some don’t have in this country it is there own fault.
One of Bessies boys (Christy) would a given 2 thousand mor than we got for the 80 acors that John Wilson ison but we didn’t want to put him out of where he been for solong , so there is 2000 and we are giving him 15 hundred for improvements which we didn’t have to do. I don’t think we are very stiff with each other but because they think the law in dacota or else they think so, we are all the one womans children, can’t understand, nor it aint fair.
Richard Whiteside, Jane Armstrong and Foster Armstrong swore James Y. Doonan and Bessie Doonan in,which made six heirs to Christy Blakley’s estate. Mr. Heble wanted John Wilson togo and bye James Y Doonan out of his share, so I don’t feel quite satisfied, It was John Wilson and D,A, Heble that went out to Dacota. We never new that they were going to 2 weeks after they came back. The judge is honest, we six came in equal for his land that he had in Kansas , it wasn’t paid for, the mortgage was due right after he died,
George ain’t any to bright, he ought to have a guardian to look after his property, I spoke to John and Henry about it and they told me that would set him crazy altogether.
James Y. Doonan lives in California,he may not know anything about the peace in the Aledo paper, Us 6 hiers sined 3 deeds , The family talked when Christy died like James and Bessie wouldn’t get anything so the Aledo people looked it up and they showed them diffferent as one Mother’s children will inherit equal alike not so with a father’s children. We all six are the one womans children , She had 8, Mary Ann Wilson Hill died without any children. Her husband wasn’t very much she left him what she had.. She had a house and a little money, this was before Christy died. Christy hired a nurse for her and settled the bill for her husband., for her husband is married again He can’t get any thing, he might get a small portion of mother’s 1/3 of a 40 is all the poor woman had, He tried and I think he gave it up.
Christy made everybody work but he was good to them.
